1J50 Soft Magnetic Alloy
Introduction to 1J50 Alloy (Ni50, Hy-Ra49, PB)
1J50, also known as Ni50, E11a, 50H, Hy-Ra49, or PB, is a nickel-iron (Ni-Fe) soft magnetic alloy containing approximately 50% nickel, 48% iron, and trace elements. This material is renowned for its high magnetic permeability and superior saturation induction density, making it indispensable for electromagnetic applications in power systems, telecommunications, and precision instrumentation.
Key Characteristics of 1J50 Alloy
High saturation induction (Bs ≈ 1.5 T) – Ideal for medium to high magnetic field applications
Excellent magnetic permeability (μ) – Enhances energy efficiency in transformers and inductors
Low coercivity (Hc) – Reduces hysteresis losses in alternating magnetic fields
Good mechanical workability – Can be rolled into thin sheets for high-frequency applications

Heat treatment
In-Process Annealing: To remove all strain and restore the alloy to a soft state suitable for further cold rolling or drawing, forming, bending or similar operations, anneal at 1020-1080°C for no more than 1 hour. In-process annealing should be performed in dissociated ammonia, hydrogen, vacuum or inert gas atmosphere.
Final Annealing: For maximum softness and the best magnetoelectric properties, cold deformed 1J50 alloy should be annealed in an oxygen-free, dry hydrogen atmosphere at 1180°C with a dew point below -40°C for 3-5 hours.
Oil, grease, paint and all other contaminants must be removed prior to annealing. During hydrogen annealing, individual parts should be separated by inert insulating powders such as magnesia and alumina.
Vacuum heat treatment can be used, but it usually results in a sacrifice of magnetic properties compared to heat treatment in a dry hydrogen atmosphere.
