Elgiloy (UNS R30003, known domestically as 3J21) is a cobalt-chromium-nickel-based precipitation-hardening alloy. Its most remarkable feature is that its strength rivals that of spring steel, while its corrosion resistance is on a completely different level. Ordinary spring steel rusts badly after being submerged in seawater for a few months, while Elgiloy remains as good as new even after years. Furthermore, it is non-magnetic, so it won't interfere with signals when used in precision instruments.
Elgiloy can remain rust-free even after being submerged in seawater for decades, and it can also be used to make springs for heart pacemakers. Our biggest impression of this material over the years is that it is a "hexagonal warrior" among cobalt-based alloys, not pursuing the pinnacle of any single performance, but being in the top tier in almost every dimension.
What makes it "hard, corrosion-resistant, and non-magnetic"?
- Cobalt is the key ingredient-its 40% cobalt content gives it a robust structure, meaning it's resistant to deformation under high temperatures and stress.
- Non-magnetic-a "steel guardian" for precision instruments. Think of it this way: if you're making parts for MRI machines or springs for precision instruments, you don't need to worry about magnetic field interference with Elgiloy. It remains perfectly still even in a strong magnetic field.
- Age hardening-further enhancing its strength. Our colleagues at the processing plant say that Elgiloy material already has a tensile strength of 1400-1900 MPa in its cold-worked state; with an aging treatment at around 520℃, the strength approaches 1900-2200 MPa.
- Corrosion resistance-it's even resistant to seawater immersion. In seawater, even at its highest strength, Elgiloy is virtually unaffected by crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and pitting corrosion. It also withstands the acidic oil and gas well environment containing hydrogen sulfide-which is why it meets the NACE MR0175 standard.
