Inconel X750 Strip (AMS 5598, UNS N07750)

Inconel X750 Strip (AMS 5598, UNS N07750)

When purchasing Inconel X750 strip, the three most critical factors are: first, confirming the condition (solution-annealed or aged); second, verifying the standard (AMS 5598 or AMS 5542); and third, checking for heat treatment requirements—if purchased in the solution-annealed condition, you must perform the aging process yourself.

Inconel X750 (UNS N07750, W.Nr. 2.4669, AMS 5598/5542) is a precipitation-hardened, nickel-chromium-based superalloy.

It is a classic example of a "heat-treatable" nickel-based alloy. While Alloy 600 relies on solid-solution strengthening-meaning its hardness and strength are fixed upon delivery-Alloy X750 is precipitation-hardenable; it is supplied in a soft state and aged by the customer, allowing its strength to more than double. For applications such as high-temperature springs, bolts, and seals that require both high strength and corrosion resistance, X750 is a classic choice with a track record spanning decades.

What is Inconel X750 Strip?

Inconel X750 strip (also known as Inconel X750 belt or Inconel X750 strapping) is a narrow,

long-form nickel alloy material with outstanding properties, including:

High-temperature strength (up to 1300°F, with useful performance up to 1800°F)

Superior corrosion & oxidation resistance

Excellent fatigue resistance & flexibility

Precipitation-hardenable for enhanced mechanical properties

Standards and Grades

When discussing Inconel X-750, we typically supply the material grades and standards commonly used by our customers:

  • AMS 5598 (Core standard for strip/sheet, thickness ≤ 0.187" (4.75 mm))
  • AMS 5542 (standard for strip/sheet; aging treatment differs slightly)
  • UNS N07750 (the most common Unified Numbering System designation)
  • W.Nr. 2.4669 (German standard number)

Mechanical Properties

(AMS 5598 Strip) - Significant differences depending on the condition

Properties

Tensile Strength (ksi) Tensile Strength (MPa) Yield Strength (ksi) Elongation
Solution-annealed condition (Condition A) ≤130 ≤896 - ≥40%
Aged condition (1300°F/20h) ≥165 ≥1138 ≥105 ≥20%
Aged state (Plate) ≥155 ≥1069 ≥100 ≥20%

Note: The elongation of Inconel X750 drops from over 40% in the solution-annealed state to approximately 20% in the aged state, indicating that the material becomes harder and more brittle after aging. All complex forming operations must be performed in the solution-annealed state; only finishing operations should be carried out after aging.

Typical Applications

Typical applications for Inconel X-750 strip include:

Aerospace: High-temperature springs, bolts, fasteners, and engine casing seals

Gas turbines: Turbine blades, seal rings, and high-temperature fasteners

Nuclear industry: Reactor internals and pressure vessel fasteners

Chemical/Petrochemical: High-temperature, corrosion-resistant fasteners and valve springs

Automotive: High-temperature exhaust system springs and turbocharger fasteners

Supply specifications and condition

When compiling real-time pricing for Inconel X750 strip, our professional team clarifies the following technical specifications to facilitate a quick and accurate quote:

Dimensions: Thickness (commonly 0.05–4.75 mm) and width

Condition: Solution-annealed (Condition A/soft state, for customer-performed aging) or Aged (finished hard state)

Surface Finish: Bright Annealed (BA), cold-rolled, or pickled

Certification Requirements: AMS 5598/5542 certification required? Intended for aerospace or nuclear power applications?

Guidance on Condition Selection:

  • For stamping, bending, or spring winding → Choose Solution-annealed (Condition A); it offers good ductility, allowing for aging treatment after fabrication.
  • For direct use of finished parts without in-house heat treatment capabilities → Choose Aged (material already possesses the required design properties).
  • This is a common pitfall-the strength difference between the solution-annealed and aged states is substantial (often twofold)-so be sure to verify this during procurement.

The most critical factor when purchasing X750 strip material is verifying its condition. The solution-annealed state is soft-with an elongation of over 40%-making it suitable for stamping; the aged state is hard-with a strength of 1100–1300 MPa-making it ready for direct installation. If you purchase the solution-annealed material and install it directly, the strength will be insufficient, and the spring will deform as soon as it is compressed. Every year, customers fall into this trap.
