Types Of Stainless Steel Bars & Rods

1. Ferritic Stainless Steel

● Chromium-based, typically with carbon content at under 0.1%

● Increased resistance to aggressive environmental conditions

● Increased resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC)

● More susceptible to intergranular corrosion

● Brittle at very low temperatures

● Most often used in fairly thin sheets or tubing, as welds aren't especially tough

2. Austenitic Stainless Steel

● Among the most common variants, used in a wide range of applications

● Weldable and formable, due to their chemical makeup of manganese, nickel, and nitrogen

● Balances moderate strength, hardness (can't be heat-treated but can be 'work-hardened'), ductility, ty, and toughness

● Relatively vulnerable to SCC unless nickel content is increased

● Pitting and crevice corrosion resistance (CCR) can be enhanced with higher molybdenum content

AISI 316L Bar

3. Martensitic Stainless Steel

● Higher carbon levels than ferritic alloys, allowing for tempering (hardness treatment)

● Higher strength, but lower corrosion resistance than most other stainless types

● Not especially formable or weldable

● More often used in stainless steel rods, bars, and other long products, as opposed to sheet materials

4. Duplex Stainless Steel

● A mixture of ferritic and austenitic types; stronger than either on its own

● Resistant to SCC

● More vulnerable to IGC at higher alloy grades

● Moderately formable

5. Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel

● Can be manufactured to very high strengths with the addition of aluminium, niobium, bium, and copper

● Relatively machinable without significant distortion

● Can either be more or less corrosion resistant than other types, depending on additives, but higher resistance incurs considerably higher costs

Types of Stainless Steel Bar Finishes

Brushed finishes offer a subtle luster that features a distinctive pattern made up of parallel lines, giving it a decorative look that isn't too glittery.

Matte finish has a dull appearance and is therefore often used where aesthetics are not an issue or where further finishing is required.

Mirror finishes are made by polishing stainless steel, making it extremely reflective. This finish masks surface damage, makes cleaning easier, and enhances appearance, so it is used for such things as column covers, ornamental trim, reflectors, steel mirrors, and wall paneling.

Stainless Steel Rod Production Process

1

Melting

The raw materials are subjected to 8 to 12 hours of high temperatures in an electric furnace. The molten metal is poured into molds and cast into various shapes. At this stage, the stainless steel bar is present in semi-finished form.

2

Forming

If needed, the semi-finished metal will undergo more forming processes. In this process, the tolerances are decided. The stainless steel bar will then be hot rolled. The thickness and other specifications of the metal can also be adjusted during this process.

3

Heat-Treating

After the formation is complete, heat-treatment, or annealing, begins. Annealing helps soften the stainless steel bar while reducing internal tension.

4

Descaling

After annealing, the surface of the stainless steel develops scales. Pickling and electro-cleaning are used to remove these scales. Both effective means of descaling, pickling involve dipping the material in nitric-hydrofluoric acid. Whereas electro-cleaning uses a cathode and phosphoric acid to pass a current onto the surface of the stainless steel. Depending on the final product, the stainless steel bar might be subjected to hot and cold rolling as well.

5

Repetition

After the hot and cold rolling process is conducted, the annealing and descaling process will be repeated. On completion of the final descaling process, the product will be cold-rolled. This is the final step in stainless steel fabrication.

6

Cutting

Once fabrication is complete, the stainless steel bar can be cut to the desired sizes. The product will be trimmed, sheared, and sawn. Nibbling can also be used to fabricate irregular shapes. Apart from the traditional methods of cutting metal, flame-cutting, plasma jet cutting, and waterjet cutting may also be used. The employment of these processes depends on the properties of the stainless steel bar, end-use, and required finish.

7

Cleaning

Before polishing, the stainless steel bar is thoroughly cleaned to prepare the surface.

8

Polishing

With different grades available, the chosen grade will vary according to the final use of the product. Through annealing, cold or hot-rolling, wire-brushing, pickling, etc., various finishes are obtained. Reflective and mirror-like finishes are possible when the surface is polished with different grades of abrasives and then buffed.

Application of Stainless Steel Bars

Construction Industry

In the construction industry, stainless steel bars are often used in areas that demand strength and corrosion resistance. Their application is particularly common in coastal and high-corrosion environments where other materials would degrade quickly.

Automotive Industry

Stainless steel bars find specific applications within the automotive industry, particularly in components requiring resistance to corrosion and heat.

Aerospace Industry

Stainless steel bars are extensively used in aerospace applications due to their exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and ability to withstand high temperatures. They are often used in engine components, fasteners, and landing gear parts.

Medical Equipment

Stainless steel bars are widely employed in the manufacture of medical equipment, primarily because of their excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. These bars are used in surgical instruments, implants such as pins and screws, and various types of medical support equipment.
