Inconel 686 Nickel Alloy Strip (ASTM B575, UNS N06686)

Inconel 686 Nickel Alloy Strip (ASTM B575, UNS N06686)

Inconel 686 is a solid solution-strengthened nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy, the "top-of-the-line" nickel-based corrosion-resistant alloy, designed to withstand the most severe corrosion.

Product Introduction

When procuring Inconel 686 nickel alloy, it must be recognized that this is no longer a routine "commodity" purchase, but a technical procurement activity aimed at finding the "ultimate solution" for extreme operating conditions. Its core value is not "low price," but rather ensuring the safety and reliability of equipment operating stably and reliably in harsh environments with severe corrosion and extremely high temperatures. The risk of production losses due to material failure far exceeds the material's share of the total procurement cost.

Our usual delivery condition is solution annealed. The specifications of the Alloy 686 strip in stock are: Thickness: 0.02mm - 16.0mm, Width: 5mm - 3000mm, tolerances (such as thickness ±0.02mm), and surface condition must be clearly defined (such as No.1 pickled surface or 2B finish).

The core industry standard for Inconel 686 nickel alloy strip is ASTM B168 / ASME SB168 (core material standard). AMS standards may be involved in fields such as aerospace, and specific confirmation is required. Please get in touch with us for a technical specification sheet or a quote.

Summary and Key Action Recommendations

Purchasing Inconel 686 alloy strip is essentially buying "long-term insurance" for your project. Your core task is not to find the lowest-priced supplier, but to identify the most reliable, consistent, and technically proficient partner.

Before proceeding, please confirm with the design engineer:

What are the most demanding operating conditions? Is it a mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid and chloride ions, or high-temperature, high-pressure seawater? Clearly define the primary corrosive media and temperature.

Does the component require further processing? Does it require welding or precision stamping? This determines the requirements for material condition and supplier collaboration.

Are there acceptable alternatives? In non-extreme corrosion areas, evaluate lower-cost alloys such as Inconel 625 to optimize the overall budget.

If you can provide more specific application environment information (e.g., specific components used in the manufacture of flue gas desulfurization systems), our Lork Group business and engineering teams can analyze more focused corrosion testing standards and potential processing collaboration points for you.

Manufacturing Process and Challenges

All top-tier performance comes with processing challenges, especially for Inconel 686 nickel alloy strip. Whether purchasing raw materials, machining simple parts, or precision-machined parts, the following points should be noted by skilled machining personnel regarding secondary processing:

Hot working is extremely sensitive:

Hot rolling or hot forming temperatures must be strictly controlled between 1000-1170°C, and rapid water cooling for solution treatment is essential after final rolling.

Machining is a major risk: Improper hot working or slow cooling can lead to the precipitation of brittle σ phase, making the material highly susceptible to intergranular corrosion and failure. This requires suppliers to have extremely high levels of process control.

Machining is a tough challenge:

Its high strength and high work hardening tendency make turning, milling, and other machining processes extremely difficult, resulting in severe tool wear. Polycrystalline diamond tools and micro-lubrication techniques are required to reduce cutting temperature, tool wear, and machining forces.

Cold working and welding:

Cold forming: Cold bending and rolling are possible, but there is significant springback, requiring equipment with higher tonnage.

Welding: Good weldability; matching welding consumables are recommended. The key is to control heat input and interpass temperature to avoid overheating of the heat-affected zone.

Key points of the quality inspection process

For Inconel 686, quality assurance relies entirely on documentation and measured data; random sampling is invalid.

  • Document Review (all are mandatory):

Material Certificate: Must include furnace number, duplex process record, full elemental spectral analysis, mechanical property report, and heat treatment record.

Conformity Certificate: Declaration of conformity to ASTM B168 standard.

Non-destructive Testing Report: For strip, a 100% ultrasonic testing report is mandatory, and acceptance must be conducted according to ASTM A578 Class B or stricter standards to ensure the absence of internal defects.

  • Required Testing Items:

Chemical Composition Analysis: Focus on molybdenum and tungsten content and total amount, as well as whether impurities such as carbon, sulfur, and phosphorus are strictly controlled.

Intergranular Corrosion Test: Requires testing according to ASTM G28, A method, and a corrosion rate report must be provided (usually <1.0 mm/year). This is the "litmus test" for verifying the adequacy of material heat treatment and the absence of σ phase risk.

Mechanical Property Testing: Room temperature tensile testing (tensile strength, yield strength, elongation) is fundamental.

Metallographic inspection: A grain size report is required (usually ASTM grade 5 or finer), and the presence of harmful phase precipitation is observed.
