Product Introduction

Nickel 201 is commercially pure (nickel content ≥99.0%) and optimised for low carbon content (≤0.02%). It exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, high-temperature stability, and good overall performance. It possesses excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, ductility, and impact toughness; its resistance to caustic alkalis, however, constitutes its core advantage.

Why does 315°C serve as a critical threshold for pure nickel materials?

  • Let us compare two specific materials: Pure Nickel 201 and Pure Nickel 200. While Pure Nickel 200 is excellent in every other respect, it suffers from one fatal flaw: if subjected to prolonged operation at temperatures exceeding 315°C, graphite precipitates form along the grain boundaries; this causes the material to become brittle-so brittle, in fact, that it will crack at the slightest impact. In contrast, Nickel 201 resolves this issue of high-temperature graphitization by reducing the carbon content from 0.15% (as found in Nickel 200) to below 0.02%.

Practical Guide to Market Procurement

When procuring, grades and standards are the technical language of the contract and must be clearly stated:

1. Grade and Marking:

General Grade: Nickel 201

UNS Number: N02201 (United States Uniform Numbering System)

Other Numbers: Chinese Grade N4, W.Nr. 2.4061 / 2.4068

2. Product Form and Standard:

Common Standards:

Internationally Used: ASTM B164, this is a commonly used standard for nickel-copper alloy bars and wires.

European Standard: DIN 17753.

Chinese Standard: Corresponding GB/T standard. Specific wire standards may reference general material specifications.

3. Condition and Specification:

Delivery Condition: Commonly available are annealed (softened, beneficial for subsequent processing), hardened (higher strength), or semi-hardened. This must be clearly specified.

Detailed specifications: diameter (e.g., φ1.0mm) and tolerance, surface condition (bright, pickled), pallet weight, packaging (to prevent surface scratches).

Note: Through past technical exchanges with clients and product testing, Lork Group has observed that Nickel 201 exhibits a relatively rapid corrosion rate in oxidizing acids (such as concentrated nitric acid or highly aerated acids). Furthermore, in high-temperature sulfur-bearing atmospheres, nickel tends to form low-melting-point sulfides, leading to severe corrosion. If your operating conditions involve the aforementioned high-temperature environments containing acids and sulfur, we recommend considering the selection of alternative materials.

Manufacturing Process and Challenges

The machining of pure nickel 201 alloy wire can be described as "user-friendly". Whether purchasing raw materials, machining simple parts, or precision-machined parts, the following points should be noted by skilled machining personnel regarding secondary processing:

Good machinability: It is suitable for all hot and cold working processes. Cold heading, drawing, and winding are relatively easy, with moderate work hardening and minimal wear on molds.

Key heat treatment: Hot working temperatures are recommended between 1200°F and 2250°F (approximately 650°C to 1230°C). Annealing (1300°F-1600°F, approximately 705°C-870°C) effectively softens the material and relieves stress.

Good weldability: Conventional welding processes (TIG, MIG, brazing, etc.) can be used, but oxy-acetylene welding is not recommended. Maintain cleanliness during welding and use compatible welding materials.

Key Points of Quality Inspection Process

Ensuring quality requires both documentation and practical testing:

  • Document Review:

Material Certificate: This is the most important document and must be provided with the goods. It should include the furnace number, measured chemical composition, mechanical property test results (such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation), and applicable standards.

  • Testing Items (as agreed in the contract):

Chemical Composition Analysis: Spectroscopic analysis is mandatory to ensure low carbon (≤0.02%) and other elements meet standards.

Mechanical Property Testing: Room temperature tensile testing should be performed on a batch basis.

Dimensional and Surface Inspection: Measure wire diameter tolerances and check the surface for scratches, cracks, or oxide scale.

Special Testing: Depending on the application, conductivity testing or intergranular corrosion susceptibility testing may be required.
