Nitronic 60 Tube(UNS S21800 / Alloy 218)
Products Description

Nitronic 60 (UNS S21800 / Alloy 218) tubing is a nitrogen-strengthened, high-silicon, high-manganese austenitic stainless steel seamless product designed specifically for unlubricated metal-to-metal sliding applications. Its key advantages include excellent galling and wear resistance, corrosion resistance superior to that of Grade 304, and a yield strength approximately double that of Grades 304 or 316.
Core Advantages
Outstanding galling and wear resistance:
This is its primary selling point. Its critical galling stress exceeds 50 ksi (345 MPa), far surpassing the approximately 2 ksi (14 MPa) of 304/316 grades.
Balanced strength and corrosion resistance:
Its yield strength in the annealed condition is roughly double that of 304/316. While its general corrosion resistance falls between 304 and 316, it offers superior resistance to chloride-induced pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking compared to 316.
High- and low-temperature performance:
It exhibits excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance (similar to 309), performing well at temperatures around 1800°F (982°C), while also maintaining outstanding low-temperature toughness.

Processing

Heat Treatment (Solution Annealing): The standard process involves holding at 1050–1066°C followed by rapid water quenching. This alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment; strength can only be increased through cold working.
Machining (Challenging): Machinability is poor; cutting efficiency is only about 50% that of Grade 304, and the material exhibits a strong tendency toward work hardening. Coated carbide tools are recommended, utilizing low cutting speeds, high feed rates, and ample coolant.
Welding (Good): Weldability is good, and conventional methods such as TIG and MIG can be used. For autogenous welding, ER218 filler wire is recommended; when welding to dissimilar steels (such as 316L), 316L or 309L filler wire may be used. No preheating is required before welding, though solution annealing is recommended after welding for thick-walled components.
