Nitronic 33 Stainless Steel Bar(UNS S24000 / ASTM XM-29)
Nitronic 33 Stainless Steel Bar
Nitronic 33 is a nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel bar that offers approximately twice the yield strength of Type 304 stainless steel while maintaining the excellent toughness and corrosion resistance characteristic of austenitic stainless steels.
Key Performance Advantages
High Strength and Excellent Toughness
Yield strength in the annealed state is approximately twice that of Grade 304, while maintaining good ductility and toughness.
Excellent Low-Temperature Performance
Exhibits outstanding strength and ductility in cryogenic environments, making it suitable for low-temperature applications.
Low Magnetic Permeability
Retains very low magnetic permeability even after severe cold working-a key characteristic distinguishing it from many austenitic stainless steels.
Resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking
Offers superior resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking compared to Grade 304, performing better in hot chloride solutions.
Bar Supply Forms and Specifications
Bars are a common form in which Nitronic 33 is supplied. Suppliers offer bars with varying degrees of precision, including hot-rolled, cold-drawn, and centerless-ground options. Executive Standard: ASTM A276 (XM-29) / A479
| Supply Form | Description |
| Cold-drawn/Ground bar | High dimensional accuracy; suitable for precision machining |
| Hot-rolled bar | Large-diameter sizes; hot-rolled surface finish |
| Custom cutting | Custom cutting available based on drawings |
Please confirm specific diameter ranges with the supplier; common sizes span Φ6 mm to Φ300 mm.

chemical composition(aSTM A276)
This specification covers hot-worked or cold-worked bars, but excludes bars intended for reforging. Its scope encompasses round, square, and hexagonal bars, as well as hot-rolled or extruded shapes (such as angles, tees, and channels) made from common stainless steel grades.

Physical properties
Density 7.76 – 7.78 g/cm³
Electrical resistivity (24°C): Approx. 70 – 74 µΩ·cm Increases with temperature; approx. 119 µΩ·cm at 800°C
Thermal conductivity: Approx. 16.3 W/(m·K) (20–100°C)
Coefficient of thermal expansion: Approx. 16.1 × 10⁻⁶/°C (20–100°C)
Magnetic permeability Very low; remains < 1.02 after 70% cold work
Processing Considerations
Hot Working (Forging)
Forging temperature: First, heat to 1093°C (2000°F) and soak; then, raise to 1177°C (2150°F), soak, and begin forging.
Solution treatment: Hold at 1038–1121°C (1900–2050°F), followed by rapid water quenching or air cooling. This is the only method for softening the material; it cannot be hardened by heat treatment and can only be strengthened through cold working.

Cold Working (Bar Forming)
High work-hardening rate: Nitronic 33 exhibits a greater tendency to work-harden than standard austenitic stainless steels. Cold drawing requires higher power input and results in greater springback; die design must account for this compensation.
