AMS 5617 / Custom 455 Stainless Steel Bar
AMS 5617 specification covers two grades of a premium aircraft-quality, corrosion-resistant steel in the form of bars, wire, forgings, and forging stock.
Custom 455 is a martensitic age-hardenable stainless steel, which exhibits properties of high strength and good corrosion resistance. Relatively soft and formable in the annealed condition, however, through a single-stage aging treatment alloy 455 develops an exceptionally high yield strength with good ductility and toughness.
Custom 455 offers unique advantages over conventional stainless steels:
Exceptional strength-to-weight ratio (up to 1700 MPa yield strength after aging)
Excellent corrosion resistance comparable to Type 630 (17-4PH) but with superior toughness
Outstanding fatigue resistance for dynamic load applications
Good formability in annealed condition with precision hardening capability

Aged condition: Develops ultimate tensile strength up to 1930 MPa (280 ksi) through simple heat treatment
Maintains good ductility (10% elongation) even at peak strength levels

Resists stress corrosion cracking in chloride environments
Performs well in marine and mildly acidic conditions
Better overall corrosion resistance than 17-4PH stainless steel
