Products Description

Stellite 12 (UNS R30012) is a medium-to-high carbon cobalt-chromium-tungsten hardfacing alloy in plate form, positioned between Stellite 6 and Stellite 1. Compared to Stellite 6, it contains a higher volume fraction of hard carbides, offering approximately 30% to 50% greater resistance to abrasive and severe sliding wear, while maintaining moderate impact and cavitation resistance.

Implementation Standards and Common Specifications

Procurement Note: The nominal composition specified by the AMS 5894 standard is 60Co-28Cr-4.5W-1.15C, which corresponds to Stellite 6 rather than Stellite 12. When purchasing Stellite 12 plate, the UNS R30012 designation and the actual composition stated in the supplier's certificate of quality should be used as the reference.

Stellite 12 flat products are commonly supplied in two categories: cold-rolled sheet and hot-rolled plate.

Type Thickness (mm)
Cold-rolled Sheet 0.8 – 4.5
Hot-rolled Plate 4.5 – 36

In addition to standard specifications, we offer custom cutting based on customer drawings; please contact us to confirm specific dimensions.

Room-temperature mechanical properties

Stellite 12 plate exhibits mechanical properties characterized by a combination of high hardness and low ductility; its hardness falls between that of Stellite 6 and Stellite 1, and while it offers superior wear resistance compared to Stellite 6, it possesses lower toughness.

Tensile Strength ~740 MPa
Yield Strength (0.2%) ~580 MPa
Hardness HRC 45-51 (435-590 HV)

Performance Advantages

Stellite 12 Plate

The key advantage of Stellite 12 plate is its wear resistance, which is 30%–50% higher than Stellite 6, while still maintaining moderate impact resistance.

Superior abrasive wear resistance: With higher carbon (1.4%–2.0%) and tungsten (7.5%–9.5%) content than Stellite 6, the material offers a significantly longer service life under severe sliding-wear conditions.

Hot hardness up to 700°C: It retains high hardness even at temperatures as high as 700°C, with a maximum long-term operating temperature of approximately 600°C–700°C-far exceeding that of tool steels and most stainless steels.

Resistance to galling and scuffing: It performs excellently when sliding against Stellite 6 or Stellite 1, making it highly suitable for metal-on-metal sliding components.

Notable performance trade-offs: It exhibits low elongation and poor resistance to heavy impact loads; it is not suitable for components subject to hammering or vibration.

How to Choose?

Stellite 6 Plate / Sheet

Choose Stellite 6: When operating conditions involve risks of impact, vibration, or cavitation.
It offers the best toughness of the three, with outstanding impact and cavitation resistance. It is suitable for components subjected to cyclic loading, such as engine valves, high-temperature/high-pressure valves, and turbine blades. If your component is likely to face mechanical impact or thermal shock, Stellite 6 is the safer choice.

Choose Stellite 12: When operating conditions are dominated by abrasive and sliding wear, and impact loads are manageable.
It is the intermediate option specialized for wear resistance. It offers significantly improved wear resistance while retaining reasonable impact and cavitation resistance. It is often paired with Stellite 6 or Stellite 1 (self-pairing or mating pairs); typical applications include industrial cutting blades, pump vanes, bearing bushings, and engine valve hardfacing.

Stellite 12 Cobalt Alloy Bar
Stellite 1 Bar(UNS R30001)

Choose Stellite 1: When operating conditions involve extreme low-angle erosion or severe abrasive wear, with virtually no impact loading.
It maximizes wear resistance. It possesses the highest hardness and the strongest resistance to abrasion and erosion. However, its toughness is very low, and it is sensitive to cracking; improper control of cooling stresses can easily lead to cracks. It is typically reserved for components subject primarily to compressive stress and pure wear, such as pump sleeves, rotating seal rings, and wear pads.

Stellite 6 is an "impact-resistant wear material," Stellite 12 represents the "balance between wear resistance and toughness," and Stellite 1 is a "specialized material offering extreme wear resistance but high brittleness." Stellite 12 serves as the choice for situations where Stellite 6 lacks sufficient wear resistance, yet Stellite 1 is too brittle and prone to cracking.
