Stellite 6 Plate / Sheet
Products Description
Stellite 6 is a cobalt-chromium-tungsten-based hardfacing alloy plate. It uses a cobalt matrix and derives its wear resistance from hard chromium and tungsten carbide phases. Its key advantage is the ability to maintain high hardness at elevated temperatures (red hardness), alongside excellent resistance to wear, galling, and corrosion. Produced via hot rolling or forging, the material features refined, fragmented carbides, resulting in toughness and impact resistance that are significantly superior to those of the as-cast alloy.
Key Performance Advantages (Sheet Form)👇

01
Outstanding hot hardness
It maintains a hardness above HRC 38 at 500°C and approximately HRC 30 at 800°C-performance levels unmatched by tool steels.
02
Resistance to galling and adhesive wear
Its low coefficient of friction allows for metal-on-metal contact without galling or material transfer, even under unlubricated conditions or in the event of lubrication failure.
03
Superior toughness compared to the as-cast state
Hot-worked (forged and rolled) plate breaks down carbides, resulting in an impact energy approximately four times that of the as-cast material; this makes it ideal for plate-like components subject to impact or bending loads.
04
Excellent resistance to cavitation and thermal shock:
It withstands the impact of collapsing bubbles in high-speed fluid flows and resists cracking under conditions of rapid thermal cycling.
Reference for sizes and supply conditions
Forged and rolled plate (6B) 0.8 – 25.4 mm
Forged and rolled sheet (6K) 1.1 – 9.5 mm Customizable rolling dimensions
Supply condition: Stellite 6 plates are processed via hot rolling or forging, which breaks down and refines the carbides, resulting in toughness and impact resistance that are significantly superior to the as-cast state. Common product forms include plates and sheets, with custom sizing available.

Processing and Heat Treatment
Solution Treatment
Hold at 1232°C followed by air cooling to achieve a uniform microstructure and facilitate processing.
Machining
Extremely difficult to cut; carbide or ceramic tools are recommended, utilizing low speeds, high feed rates, and ample cooling. Grinding or Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is preferred for finishing operations.
Welding
TIG or plasma hardfacing using ERCoCr-A filler wire is recommended. Strict control of preheat and interpass temperatures is required.
Procurement Considerations
Specify Material Form: Properties differ significantly between as-cast and wrought (6B/6K) forms. Wrought plate offers superior toughness, making it suitable for applications involving impact or bending.
Confirm Standards: Clearly specify requirements during procurement to prevent suppliers from substituting as-cast material.
Avoid Impact Loads: The alloy has low elongation (approximately 5–10% in the forged state) and is unsuitable for operating conditions involving severe impact.
