Products Description
Precision alloys are a class of metallic materials characterized by unique physical properties and functional attributes. Unlike conventional structural alloys-which primarily focus on strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance-precision alloys emphasize specific parameters such as magnetic properties, coefficients of thermal expansion, elastic characteristics, and electrical resistance. Depending on their specific performance requirements, these alloys are widely utilized in sectors including aerospace, electronics and electrical engineering, precision instrumentation, automation equipment, and medical devices.
With the advancement of the electronic information, precision manufacturing, and high-end equipment industries, materials such as soft magnetic alloys, expansion alloys, and high-performance elastic alloys are receiving increasing attention. Familiarity with the classification and typical grades of precision alloys enables procurement professionals to select the most appropriate materials based on specific operational conditions and product performance requirements.
Classification of Precision Alloys
According to the traditional precision alloy classification system, they are usually divided into six categories: soft magnetic alloys, deformed permanent magnet alloys, elastic alloys, expansion alloys, thermal bimetals, and precision resistance alloys. Different categories have different performance characteristics, and the corresponding application directions are also obviously different.
Lork primarily supplies five major categories.
Soft magnetic alloys
Deformed permanent magnet alloys
Elastic alloys
Expansion alloys
Precision resistance alloys
Soft magnetic alloys
Soft magnetic alloys represent the most widely used category of precision alloys, offering the greatest variety of grades. Characterized by high magnetic permeability, low coercivity, and favorable magnetization properties, these materials can be rapidly magnetized under an external magnetic field and easily demagnetized once the field is removed. They are primarily employed in applications such as electromagnetic energy conversion, magnetic signal transmission, and magnetic shielding. Permalloy serves as a prime example; with a nickel content ranging from 35% to 90%, its composition can be precisely adjusted to achieve a spectrum of magnetic performance-from general-purpose to ultra-high-performance levels.
Vacoflux 50 / Co50 / Hiperco 50 / 1J22 Soft Magnetic Alloy
Features high saturation magnetic induction; suitable for electromagnetic equipment operating at high magnetic flux densities.
HyMu 50 Permalloy 50 Bar (W.Nr. 1.3922 / FeNi50)
Offers a good balance of magnetic properties and processability; suitable for use in transformer cores and electromagnetic components.
Permalloy 80 Pipe (ASTM A753, Ni80)
Characterized by high magnetic permeability; commonly used for magnetic shielding, precision transformers, and magnetic components.
Moly Permalloy Plate (1J85, UNS N14080)
Suitable for magnetic cores and precision magnetic components that require high responsiveness to weak magnetic signals.
Deformed permanent magnet alloys
After appropriate processing and heat treatment, wrought permanent-magnet alloys can maintain stable remanence and high coercivity, exhibiting permanent magnetic properties. Unlike soft-magnetic alloys, these materials are characterized primarily by their ability to retain magnetic properties after the external magnetic field is removed.
P6 alloy is an iron-cobalt-vanadium (Fe-Co-V) wrought permanent magnet alloy characterized by a "shape-first, harden-later" process-in its solution-treated state, it can be cold-rolled into thin strips or cold-drawn into fine wires, and subsequently subjected to an aging treatment to develop its hysteresis properties. It is specifically designed for use in hysteresis motor rotors, aeronautical gyroscopes, and magnetic components for precision instruments.
Vicalloy Wire(W.Nr. 2.4713,UNS K92839 / K92841)
Vicalloy is a classic grade of iron-cobalt-vanadium (Fe-Co-V) wrought permanent magnet alloy. In its solution-treated state, it can be forged, rolled, drawn, and machined. Following an aging treatment, its coercivity increases to 14–18 kA/m, with a remanence of approximately 0.9–1.2 T. It is widely used for rotors in hysteresis motors, hysteresis-type gyroscope motors, and precision magnetic components.
Elastic alloys
Elastic alloys possess a high elastic limit, excellent elastic stability, and good fatigue resistance, allowing them to retain strong elastic recovery capabilities even after repeated loading. Their performance directly influences the service life and measurement stability of precision elastic components.
ASTM F1058 Elgiloy CoCr Alloy(UNS R30003, Phynox)
Non-magnetic, corrosion-resistant, highly elastic, high-strength, and fatigue-resistant; suitable for instrument springs and other elastic components operating at temperatures up to 400°C. It offers a unique advantage in applications that require both corrosion resistance and elasticity.
Ni-Span C Alloy 902 (ASTM F30, UNS K94610)
A representative grade of constant-elasticity alloys, it exhibits a low frequency-temperature coefficient within the range of -40 to 80°C and is specifically used for vibrators in mechanical filters, tuning forks in frequency resonators, and reeds in resonant relays.
Elinvar is a classic constant-elasticity alloy; its core characteristic is that its elastic modulus remains virtually unchanged with temperature over a specific temperature range.
Expansion alloys
Expansion alloys represent one of the most widely used categories of precision alloys. Their engineering rationale is not to achieve zero expansion, but rather to precisely match their coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) to that of a specific material, thereby enabling hermetic glass-to-metal or ceramic-to-metal seals. If this match is inaccurate, the sealed interface may crack or leak during thermal cycling; consequently, the selection of an expansion alloy is fundamentally a matter of "tailoring the choice to the specific material being matched."
Possessing thermal expansion characteristics that match those of specific types of glass and ceramics, it is commonly used in electronic packaging, glass-to-metal sealing, and electrical vacuum devices.
Invar 36 Low-Expansion Alloy Sheet (DIN 912)
Characterized by an extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion; suitable for precision measuring instruments, optical equipment, cryogenic storage and transport equipment, and structural components requiring high dimensional stability.
Possesses specific thermal expansion properties; commonly used in electronic components and glass-to-metal sealing structures.
Expansion alloys are an important class of materials used in precision electronic packaging and the manufacturing of precision instruments; among them, Invar 36 and Kovar are prominent examples that attract significant attention in the international market.
thermal bimetals
A bimetallic strip (or thermostatic bimetal) typically consists of two or more layers of metallic materials with different coefficients of thermal expansion. When the temperature changes, each layer expands to a different degree, causing the material as a whole to bend or deform.
Such materials are primarily used in temperature control and thermal protection devices, including thermostats, thermal relays, overheat protectors, and automatic control components. Key considerations in selecting these materials include their thermal deformation characteristics, temperature response, and long-term stability.
Precision resistance alloys
Precision resistance alloys are designed to ensure that electrical resistance remains stable despite temperature fluctuations or long-term service. In contrast, the resistance of ordinary conductive wires tends to drift with temperature, which can introduce systematic errors in applications such as precision measurement, standard resistors, and shunts. The key performance metrics for these alloys are their resistivity and their temperature coefficient of resistance.
Cr20Ni80 is a classic grade of nickel-chromium precision resistance alloy. It exhibits excellent linearity and minimal drift within the temperature range of -50°C to 500°C, making it the standard material choice for precision resistive components, shunts, and sampling resistors. Furthermore, the dense Cr₂O₃ film that forms on its surface provides oxidation resistance at high temperatures-up to the 1000°C range-allowing it to also function as an electrothermal element.
application
Precision alloys are a class of metallic materials possessing unique physical properties or specific functions. By precisely controlling their composition, microstructural organization, and manufacturing processes, these materials are engineered to exhibit stable thermal, electrical, magnetic, and mechanical characteristics. Unlike conventional structural metals, precision alloys prioritize the stability, controllability, and consistency of their performance; they are widely utilized in sectors such as electronics and electrical engineering, aerospace instrumentation, precision measurement, automated control, telecommunications equipment, and medical devices.
