Permalloy 80 Pipe (ASTM A753,Ni80)

Permalloy 80 Pipe (ASTM A753,Ni80)

Permalloy is a type of nickel-iron soft magnetic alloy with extremely high permeability and extremely low coercivity. It is a "magnetic highway" that is extremely sensitive to external magnetic fields. Its core value lies in its ability to be highly magnetized even in extremely weak magnetic fields, and the magnetization almost completely disappears when the magnetic field is removed (with very low remanence). This is unparalleled by any other material.

Product Introduction

Based on our procurement experience over the past two years, when you, as a procurement professional, encounter Permalloy 80 pipe, it indicates you are dealing with a very specific and high-value application. This is no longer about strength and corrosion resistance, but about "precise electromagnetic properties."

Permalloy 80, also known as Mumetal, has different names in different countries around the world. These include Alloy 80 (common name in the US), PC-80 (common name in Japanese industry), Ni80 (common name in Europe), and 79НМ (common name in Russia). Its unified designation is UNS N14080. It is a specialized precision alloy material used in precision transformers, magnetic shielding covers, high-frequency transformers, audio/video recording heads, and high-sensitivity relays.

Please remember: the essence of procuring Permalloy tubing is procuring a "precise electromagnetic parameter," not simply a metal tube. Any deviation from this core principle can lead to the failure of the final product.

Core Material Properties

(The Foundation for Your Negotiation and Technical Communication)

1. Extremely high initial permeability: Permalloy generates a very strong magnetic induction intensity even in a weak magnetic field. This is its core performance indicator.

2. Extremely low coercivity: This means that Permalloy 80 is easily magnetized and also extremely easy to demagnetize, with minimal hysteresis loss.

3. Low saturation magnetic induction intensity: Compared to silicon steel sheets, it "saturates" under higher magnetic fields, but this is precisely its advantage for small-signal processing.

4. High resistivity: Compared to pure iron, it has a higher resistivity, which reduces eddy current losses and makes it suitable for higher frequencies.

5. Extreme sensitivity to performance:

  • Permalloy is extremely sensitive to compositional fluctuations: a difference of ±0.5% in nickel content can lead to significant changes in performance.
  • Extremely sensitive to heat treatment (annealing) processes: The final electromagnetic properties depend entirely on the final annealing process under strictly controlled temperature and atmosphere (pure hydrogen or vacuum). The tubing you purchase must have undergone this final magnetic property heat treatment.

Procurement Specifications and Industry Standards

(How to write a professional inquiry form)

Based on our past procurement experience and the pitfalls we've encountered, your Permalloy 80 Pipe request specification must exceed standard dimensional requirements. Otherwise, the supplier will quote you a price and product for "industrial pipe," which is completely unusable.

1. Grade and Standard:

Clearly specify national or American standards: For example, "Grade 1J79 in GB/T 15018-1994" or "Complies with ASTM A753 Alloy 4 (80Ni-4Mo-Fe) chemical composition requirements."

Emphasize final condition: It must specify "cold-drawn + hydrogen/vacuum final annealing state (delivery state)." This is a prerequisite for performance assurance.

2. Precise dimensions and tolerances:

Outer diameter (OD), inner diameter (ID), wall thickness, and length. Tolerance requirements are usually stricter than for ordinary pipes because they involve subsequent precise assembly and magnetic circuit consistency.

3. Core Electromagnetic Performance Requirements (Core of the Technical Agreement):

It must be clearly stated that: "In the delivered state, the material, tested using the XXX method, shall have an initial permeability (μi) not less than [e.g.] 50,000, and a coercivity (Hc) not greater than [e.g.] 2 A/m."

Reference testing standards can be specified, such as national standards or IEC 60404-8.

4. Special Requirements:

Magnetic Performance Consistency: The performance variation range within the same batch or even different sections of a single pipe is required.

Test Reports: The supplier is required to provide electromagnetic performance test reports (magnetization curves and hysteresis loops) for each batch of materials.

Packaging: Individual packaging is required to prevent impacts and rust (commonly using rust-proof paper and vacuum bags), as the surface is easily scratched.

Processing difficulty and key points

(Understanding the reasons for the high price)

The manufacture of Permalloy 80 pipe is extremely challenging, requiring vacuum induction melting (VIM) to ensure high purity and precise composition control-a high-end material. It has a narrow temperature window during hot working, making it prone to cracking. While cold drawing is possible, it results in rapid work hardening, necessitating intermediate annealing.

Final Heat Treatment is Key to "Turning Stone into Gold":

High-temperature, long-duration annealing in a pure hydrogen atmosphere or high vacuum is essential to relieve stress, form large grains, and achieve optimal magnetic properties.

This is the core technological secret and the source of cost. The heat treatment furnace and process directly determine the product grade and price.

Subsequent Processing Restrictions:

After purchasing Permalloy 80 pipe, customers are strictly prohibited from performing any welding, secondary high-temperature heating, or severe cold deformation. Any machining (such as cutting) must be extremely gentle and may require subsequent stress-relieving annealing (which will alter properties).

Optimal Procurement Strategy: Purchase finished pipes of the final size and shape whenever possible, allowing the supplier to handle all heat treatments.

Permalloy 80 Alloy

Chemical Composition

(The absolute focus of acceptance testing)

Permalloy is not a single brand name, but a family of brands. Specific brands must be clearly identified during procurement.

Weight% Permalloy 80
Ni 78.50 ~ 80.50
Mo 3.80 ~ 4.20
Mn ≤ 0.60
Si ≤ 0.30
Cr ≤ 0.20

Key electromagnetic performance indicators

(Data must be requested during procurement) The following is a typical range for seamless annealed pipes:

Material (Annealed state)

Initial Permeability μi

30,000 - 100,000
Maximum Permeability μm 100,000 - 500,000
Coercivity Hc ≤ 1.5 A/m
Saturation magnetic induction intensity Bs 0.75-0.85T

Mechanical properties (minor but necessary to know):

In the annealed state, it is very soft, with very low strength and hardness, but good plasticity. Its mechanical properties are negligible compared to its electromagnetic properties.
