17-4 PH Round Stainless Steel Bar(UNS S17400 / AMS 5622)

17-4PH stainless steel is a versatile engineering material that can achieve high strength through simple heat treatment, while also offering good corrosion resistance and ease of processing.

This type of martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steel is commonly used in aircraft engine mounts, landing gear components, surgical instruments, orthopedic tools (non-implantable), and dental drills. It features convenient "one-click hardening," good corrosion resistance, and an excellent strength-to-weight ratio.

Here, I'd like to share two types of 17-4 PH Round Stainless Steel Bars that we commonly supply. One is in the A temper, which is suitable for machining because of its low hardness in the solution-treated state and excellent machinability, similar to free-cutting steel. This is a major reason for its widespread use. The other type is in the H900 temper, where machining is limited. Please note that if you purchase H900 tempered stainless steel bars, given their inherent hardness and brittleness, we can only perform limited machining operations such as grinding and EDM. Conventional cutting operations such as turning, milling, and drilling are strictly prohibited; otherwise, the tool may chip, or the parts may crack.

Specifications and Industry Standards

A clear Request for Quotation (RFQ) for 17-4 PH Round Stainless Steel Bar is half the battle. We will confirm the final answers to the following questions with you in the early stages:

1. Your Desired Material Standard and Grade:

Bar Product Standard: ASTM A564 (General Standard) or AMS 5643 (Aerospace Standard, Stricter) or others.

Unified Grade: UNS S17400.

Common Format: "17-4PH (UNS S17400), Condition H900, Complies with ASTM A564 standard."

2. Specifications and Conditions (Lifeline Clauses):

You can find what you need in our regular inventory. We generally stock bars from Ф4mm to Ф600mm. However, there may be situations where materials are scarce and there is no stock available for custom orders. For example, aerospace bars of AMS 5643/AMS 5622 require custom orders starting from the metallurgical stage. 2. You need to discuss the diameter, length, and tolerances with us (H11 is a commonly used precision tolerance).

Delivery Condition: Must be specified in capital letters, for example: Condition A (Solution Annealed) or Condition H900 (Aged).

3. Special Requirements (Add as needed):

Non-destructive Testing: For critical rotating components (such as pump shafts), 100% ultrasonic testing (UT) can be required.

Mechanical Property Guarantee: The measured yield strength value in the H900 condition can be specified in the quality certificate.

We offer three commonly used delivery conditions: Condition A (bar stock condition for subsequent machining; softer, machinable), Condition H900 (most commonly used high-strength condition; pre-heat-treated finished bars, or condition A bars purchased and machined and aged by yourself), and Condition H1150 (a balance of high strength and corrosion resistance, with better resistance to stress corrosion). These are available for your selection.

Key points for procurement: You must clearly define the delivery condition of the purchased bars. Is it "A condition" that you will process and heat-treat yourself, or do you require the supplier to provide finished products in "H900 condition"? The prices, uses, and processing methods of the two are vastly different.

Quality Inspection Process

  • Document Review:

We will issue a Material Test Report (MTR): This must include the chemical composition and measured mechanical properties for the corresponding temper.

  • Physical Inspection: Our inspection generally consists of the following steps:

1. Dimensions and Appearance: Verify the diameter of the 17-4 PH Stainless Steel Bar and check for cracks and folds on the surface.

2. Chemical Composition Verification (PMI): This is the most important and effective on-site testing method. Use a portable spectrometer to focus on verifying the content of chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), and niobium (Nb).

Cr: Ensure it is above 16% to guarantee it is stainless steel.

Cu: Crucial! Must be ≥3.2%. Insufficient copper content is a common cause of substandard strength. Many cheap "alternatives" reduce the copper content.

Nb: A reading should be provided; this is a characteristic element of 17-4 PH.

3. Hardness Testing (Fastest and Most Effective):

If purchasing in temper A: Measure HRB or HRC; it should be ≤ HRC 32. Excessive hardness indicates insufficient annealing, making subsequent processing difficult.

If purchasing H900 temper: Measure HRC; it must be within the range of 40-48. This is direct evidence of acceptable strength.

If an authoritative testing report is required, it needs to be discussed in advance. Third-party testing of the goods will be arranged. We will send samples for testing, and the report will generally be sent to you along with the goods.
