AMS 5659 15-5PH Stainless Steel Bar
AMS 5659 specification covers a corrosion-resistant steel in the form of bars, wire, forgings, flash welded rings, extrusions, and stock for forging. 15-5PH stainless steel is a martensitic, precipitation-hardening material with chromium, nickel and copper. It is often a first choice in the aerospace industry for fasteners and structural components.
15-5PH stainless steel unique structure provides increased toughness and better corrosion resistance than its predecessor, 17-4 PH. Both inclusion control and a minimized amount of delta ferrite as compared to 17-4 stainless steel contribute to the greater toughness of 15-5.

Manufacturing process
15-5PH stainless steel can be machined under any of the attainable conditions. Firstly, the alloy is mildly formed in the overaged condition. It is then welded using welding techniques such as shielded fusion or resistance methods. The material is heat treated at 1038°C (1900°F) for 1/2 h, and then air cooled. This process is followed by hot-working the material and annealing at 1038°C (1900°F) for 1 h. Finally, the alloy can be cold-worked to improve its yield strength.
