15-5PH bar is a precipitation-hardening, corrosion resistant, martensitic steel that shows good mechanical properties at temperatures up to 600° F. Capable of high hardness and strength after a simple heat treat. 15-5PH has high strength and good toughness in all directions as a base stainless steel and in welding applications.
15-5PH bar can be heat treated at low temperatures for a short time to minimize scaling and distortion. 15-5 when vacuum arc remelted improves cleanliness. 15-5ph is martensitic and magnetic in both PH (precipitation hardened) and solution treated conditions.
15-5PH offers all the attractive performance characteristics of 17-4PH, including excellent ductility and transverse notch toughness - all from a single, low-temperature heat treatment. Heat treatment is conducted at a temperature range of 482°C (900°F) to 621°C (1150°F) though specific figures are dictated by the actual toughness and strength required.
15-5PH bar also offers good corrosion resistance, and the mechanical properties are also superior when compared to 17-4PH in larger sections. Typical applications for this material include oil and gas sector components, aircraft flap tracks, engine pylons, structural aerospace components, chemical processing equipment and nuclear reactor components.
