Haynes 556 Nickel Alloy Strip (ASTM B435, UNS R30556)
Product Introduction
Haynes 556 (ASTM B435, UNS R30556, Alloy 556) exhibits exceptional high-temperature strength and stability within a temperature range of 800°C to 1100°C. It also possesses excellent resistance to oxidation and high-temperature corrosion, outstanding resistance to environmental corrosion, and good machinability and weldability.
It is an iron-nickel-chromium-cobalt-based solid solution strengthened superalloy. Its value lies in its comprehensive high performance, especially in applications requiring both high-temperature strength and environmental corrosion resistance.
When requesting a quote, in addition to specifications and standards, proactively inform the supplier of your subsequent processing methods (such as whether it is mainly stamping, bending, or welding). They may recommend a more suitable delivery method based on this, or even provide processing parameter suggestions, thereby helping you reduce overall costs. Please get in touch with us for a technical specification sheet or a quote.
Procurement Guide: Specifications, Industry Standards, and Qualifications
- Product Forms and Specifications:
Haynes 556 alloy strip (sheet and strip). Specific thickness, width, and length ranges need to be negotiated with the supplier and are usually customizable to meet specific requirements.
- Key Standards:
ASTM B435: Standard for alloy 556 alloy sheet, sheet, and strip.
AMS 5798: Aerospace Materials Specification, covering forgings and bars, can be used as a quality reference.
Other relevant standards include ASTM B906, etc.
UNS R30556: Uniform Numbering System code for this alloy.
- Delivery Condition:
Strip is typically supplied in a solution-annealed condition. This is the standard delivery condition, achieved through rapid cooling after high-temperature heating (usually water quenching), allowing the alloying elements to fully dissolve into the austenitic matrix, resulting in an optimal balance of strength, plasticity, toughness, and corrosion resistance, as well as good microstructural stability. The surface is typically pickled or sandblasted.
- Supplier Qualifications:
When selecting suppliers, priority should be given to manufacturers or authorized distributors of specialty alloy plates with a complete quality system. For applications with stringent requirements (such as aerospace), it is particularly important whether the supplier possesses relevant certifications such as AS9100 (View Lork Alloy - About Us or contact us to view the original certification.)
Manufacturing Process and Challenges
Haynes 556 alloy has high strength and a significant work-hardening tendency, making it challenging to process. Whether purchasing raw materials, machining simple parts, or precision-machined parts, the following points should be noted by skilled machining personnel regarding secondary processing:
Cold Working:
During cold working processes such as stamping and bending, the material hardens rapidly. Strict control of deformation per pass is essential, and intermediate annealing should be performed at appropriate times to restore the material's plasticity and prevent cracking.
Weldability:
The alloy has good weldability and can be welded using conventional fusion welding methods such as TIG and MIG. The key is to select suitable welding materials, such as Haynes 556 or ERNiCrCoMo-1 welding wire. Careful control of heat input and interpass temperature is necessary. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required (unless the structure is complex or stress relief is required).

Key Points of Quality Inspection Process
To ensure the material quality of Haynes 556 nickel alloy bars, a complete third-party testing report should be requested from the supplier during procurement. Lork Inspection Laboratory's comprehensive testing program lists the following four key testing items:
1. Chemical Composition Analysis: Upon arrival, a third party can be commissioned to perform spectral analysis to verify that the composition (especially key elements such as Cr, Co, Mo, and W) meets the standard requirements.
2. Mechanical Property Testing: Tensile tests are conducted at room temperature to verify that tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation meet the standards.
3. Non - destructive testing: For strip materials, eddy current testing or ultrasonic testing can be arranged as needed to detect surface, near-surface, or internal defects.
4. Metallographic Analysis: Check grain size and the presence of harmful phases to ensure a good microstructure.
5. Corrosion Resistance Assessment: For applications with strict corrosion resistance requirements, intergranular corrosion sensitivity testing (such as ASTM G28 A method) can be requested.
