Welding Processes for Hastelloy G-30
Hastelloy G-30 is highly amenable to common welding techniques, including:
- Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG): Ideal for thin sections and precision welds, ensuring high-quality, clean joints.
- Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG): Suitable for thicker sections and automated welding, offering efficiency and productivity.
- Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick): Provides versatility for field welding and repairs.

Heat Treatment: Mill Annealing and Re-Annealing
Hastelloy G-30 wrought products are supplied in the Mill Annealed (MA) condition to optimize corrosion resistance and ductility. Key heat treatment guidelines include:
- Annealing Temperature: 1177°C (2150°F) with a hold time of 10–30 minutes (depending on thickness).
- Quenching: Water quenching is recommended for most applications; rapid air cooling is acceptable for structures thinner than 10 mm (0.375 inches).
- Re-Annealing Requirements:
After hot forming operations to restore optimal properties.
After cold forming operations resulting in ≥7% outer fiber elongation.
Hot and Cold Forming Considerations
Hot Working:
Hastelloy G30 can be hot forged, hot rolled, hot upset, hot extruded, and hot formed. However, it is more sensitive to strain and strain rates than austenitic stainless steels. Recommendations include:
- Start Temperature: 1149°C (2100°F).
- Finish Temperature: 927°C (1700°F).
- Best Practices: Use moderate reductions and frequent re-heating to avoid cracking.
Cold Working:
- The alloy is stiffer and work-hardens more rapidly than austenitic stainless steels.
- Cold forming may require multiple stages with intermediate anneals to avoid excessive hardening.
- Processes like spinning, drop hammering, punching, and shearing are feasible with proper techniques.
