Nickel-Chromium-Iron Solid-Solution Strengthened High-Temperature Alloy | Corrosion and Oxidation Resistant | ASTM B166 / AMS 5665

Inconel 600 (UNS N06600) wire is a nickel-chromium-iron-based corrosion-resistant alloy wire. It offers excellent oxidation resistance and resistance to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking, along with good high-temperature strength and workability. ASTM B166 is one of the most important product standards for Inconel 600 wire.

ASTM B166 explicitly covers N06600 cold-worked wire and specifies tensile strength and winding test requirements based on wire diameter and condition. Lork supplies Inconel 600 precision wire, filaments, spring wire, lock wire, and coiled wire conforming to ASTM B166, and provides corresponding chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, and quality documentation.

Inconel 600 wire is supplied in three states: annealed, spring-tempered, and cold-drawn. The annealed state is soft, with excellent plasticity and an elongation of not less than 30%, suitable for subsequent bending, braiding, or shaping processes. The tempered state of springs is a cold-worked strengthened state, with tensile strength reaching 1103–1379 MPa. It is suitable for final products such as springs and locking wires that require strength and do not require subsequent aging treatment. The cold-drawn state is an intermediate state between the two and can be customized according to the customer's specific requirements for strength and plasticity.

Winding test

The wrap test is one of the key non-destructive/physical evaluation methods used to assess the ductility, surface quality, and crack resistance of cold-drawn Inconel 600 (UNS N06600) wire and fine wire.

In accordance with the ASTM B166 specifications for cold-worked wire, the wrapping test is performed under the following conditions:

The state and diameter of the filament material: Annealed and conventionally tempered wire, regardless of size, is tested around a mandrel of its own diameter. Spring-tempered wires are distinguished by diameter: wires with a diameter of no more than 5.82 mm are wound around a mandrel of its own diameter, and wires with a diameter greater than 5.82 mm are wound around a mandrel twice its own diameter.

Test method: Continuously wind the wire for 8 turns to form a closed helix (with a pitch approximately equal to the wire diameter) around a mandrel of the specified diameter.

Acceptance criteria: After winding, the wire shall not exhibit breakage, nor shall it show a "pebbled" or "orange-peel" surface.

Note: The above performance requirements do not apply to wire that has been straightened and cut.
