1.4472 Stainless Steel
1.4427 Stainless Steel is a premium implant-grade alloy ideal for load-bearing applications where strength, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility are critical. Its nitrogen-enhanced composition addresses the limitations of traditional 316L stainless steel.
1.4427 Stainless Steel offers better tensile strength, wear resistance, and resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion than the 316LVM grade. Obtained through slag remelting, this grade contains no ferrite, and the inclusion cleanliness of its microstructure makes it non-magnetic and biocompatible with human tissue. This stainless steel alloy is used in the manufacture of heavy-use orthopaedic implants and osteosynthesis devices, such as very thin screws or high-mobility prosthesis.
1.4472 implant grade stainless steel combines excellent corrosion resistance with good mechanical properties. Due to the stringent production process (consumable electrode remelting), a high quality, surgical implant grade is achieved and due to the absence of ferrite is entirely non-magnetic.

Designation & Standards
ISO 5832 9: Specifies high-nitrogen stainless steel for surgical implants.
ASTM F1586: This covers wrought nitrogen-strengthened alloy for surgical applications.
Common names: "Orthopedic stainless steel" or "high-nitrogen 21Cr-10Ni-3Mn-2.5Mo."

Properties
Mechanical Strength: Higher yield strength than 316L (e.g., ~550 MPa vs. ~300 MPa) due to nitrogen.
Corrosion Resistance: Superior in saline/chloride environments (critical for bodily fluids).
Biocompatibility: Passes ISO 10993 tests (cytotoxicity, sensitization).
Non-Magnetic: Austenitic structure ensures MRI compatibility.
Forgeability
The grade can be hot forged in the temperature range 1000/1150°C.
Polishability
The high level of inclusionary cleanliness and the homogeneity of the microstructure of this grade allows optimum polishing.
Typical Heat Treatments
Annealing at 1050-1080°C followed by rapid quenching can be carried out after forging to restore corrosion resistance, but no heat treatment is used to harden the grade.
Corrosion resistance
The grade is highly resistant to general and pitting corrosion due to its high molybdenum and nitrogen content combined with its low inclusion rate.
Standard Sizes
Round bars are annealed, medium-hard or hard depending on the diameter – Surface ground or peeled.
