Haynes 188 Plate (AMS 5608, W.Nr. 2.4683)
Haynes 188 (UNS R30188, W.Nr. 2.4683, AMS 5608) is a cobalt-nickel-chromium-tungsten solid-solution strengthened superalloy.
The standout feature of this material is the addition of a small amount of lanthanum-just a few parts per thousand. While the role of lanthanum might sound mysterious, it essentially ensures that the oxide film adheres firmly and does not detach. When exposed to high temperatures of 1095°C for extended periods, the oxide scale on ordinary alloys tends to blister and flake off, leaving the underlying metal directly exposed to the corrosive atmosphere. In contrast, the oxide film on Haynes 188 "grows" into the substrate; it is self-healing and does not peel away. Why has this alloy been the standard choice for decades for the flame tubes and transition ducts of aero-engine combustion chambers? It is not because it boasts the highest strength, but because of its exceptional longevity.
Typical applications
Typical applications include:
Aerospace: Combustor liners, transition ducts, afterburner liners, nozzle flaps, and flame holders
Gas turbines: Industrial gas turbine combustor components, seal rings, and nozzle partitions
High-temperature industrial furnaces: Furnace linings, radiant tubes, and high-temperature fixtures
Nuclear power/Chemical industry: Components requiring resistance to high-temperature oxidation and hot corrosion by sulfates
In summary: For any thin-sheet structural application operating above 900°C that requires long-term oxidation resistance as well as weldability and formability, Haynes 188 is a proven, reliable choice backed by decades of use.

A note regarding temperature limits: Haynes 188 is suitable for long-term service at temperatures up to 1095°C. Above this temperature, oxidation accelerates and strength decreases. If the application involves higher temperatures, Haynes 230 is recommended.
Standards and Grades
When our clients are looking for Haynes 188 plate, the required standards generally need to be confirmed based on the material's intended application:
| ASTM B435 | General standard for plate/sheet |
| AMS 5608 | Core standard for aerospace-grade plate/sheet and strip |
| ASME SB-435 | Standard for pressure vessel applications |
| UNS R30188 | Most common Unified Numbering System designation |
| W.Nr. 2.4683 | German standard designation |
| GH5188 / GH188 | Chinese national standard grade designation |
Technical Communication
We generally believe that the following questions will be very helpful for technical discussions regarding the procurement of Haynes 188 plate.
Dimensions: Thickness (commonly 0.5–50 mm), width, length
Surface finish: Cold-rolled bright annealed, hot-rolled pickled
Condition: Solution-annealed (standard delivery condition)
Certification requirements: Is AMS 5608 certification required? Is it for use in aero-engines?
Recommendations on condition selection:
For in-house stamping, forming, or welding → Solution-annealed (standard)
For use as a finished component → Solution-annealed meets most operating conditions
For long-term service at elevated temperatures → Request solution-annealed plus aged condition from the supplier
Summary of Our Experience
Factors Affecting Price:
Prices of Cobalt, Tungsten, and Nickel: With compositions of approximately 40% cobalt, 14% tungsten, and 22% nickel, fluctuations in the prices of these three metals directly impact costs.
Specifications: Thin sheets (<1mm) are more expensive than thick plates; narrow slit strips are more expensive than full-width sheets.
Surface Finish: Bright annealed is more expensive than pickled.
Condition: Aged condition is more expensive than solution-annealed condition (due to an additional heat treatment step).
Certification Requirements: AMS aerospace-grade is more expensive than ASTM industrial-grade.
Purchase Volume: Discounts are negotiable for tonnage-level orders.
