Inconel 601 Nickel Sheet (AMS 5870): A High-Performance Solution for Extreme Environments

AMS 5870 governs the production and properties of Inconel 601 (UNS N06601) in the form of sheet, strip, and plate. This nickel-chromium-iron superalloy is engineered for exceptional oxidation and corrosion resistance, making it ideal for high-temperature structural applications in aerospace, chemical processing, and power generation industries.

Inconel 601's high chromium content (23%) and aluminum addition (1.4%) form a protective oxide layer that withstands temperatures up to 2200°F (1204°C), significantly outperforming many conventional nickel alloys. The material is available in solution heat-treated or annealed conditions, allowing optimization for either rupture-limited (high-temperature) or tensile-limited (lower-temperature) applications.

Key Properties & Metallurgical Advantages

1. Unmatched High-Temperature Performance

Oxidation resistance up to 2200°F (1204°C) due to a stable Cr₂O₃-Al₂O₃ surface layer.

Excellent creep resistance under prolonged thermal exposure, ideal for combustors, heat exchangers, and furnace components.

Low thermal expansion coefficient minimizes stress during thermal cycling.

2. Superior Corrosion Resistance

Resists chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (SCC), sulfur compounds, and carburizing atmospheres.

Maintains integrity in oxidizing and reducing acids, including nitric, sulfuric, and phosphoric acid environments.

3. Mechanical Properties & Fabrication Benefits

Solution heat-treated condition (AMS 5870) optimizes rupture strength above 1000°F (540°C) for applications like gas turbine components.

Annealed condition provides superior formability and weldability for structural applications below 1000°F (540°C).

Excellent weldability via TIG, MIG, and resistance welding with minimal risk of hot cracking.
