AMS 5537 is a sub-type specification of Cobalt L605, a cobalt-based superalloy that has several crucial characteristics that make it suitable for use in high-temperature and high-corrosive environments. L605 (also known as Haynes 25, Stellite 25) is a wrought cobalt-chromium-tungsten-nickel alloy. Typical composition includes 20% Cr, 15% W, 10% Ni, and 3% Fe, with cobalt as the base.

Thanks to the high concentration of chromium and tungsten,AMS 5537 L605 Cobalt Alloy Sheet has outstanding oxidation resistance at temperature up to 2000 °F (1093 °C), excellent high-temperature strength of up to 1500 °F (1093 °C), and excellent galling resistance.

Lrok Group offers AMS 5537 in the form of foil, plate, sheet, and strip. This specification is solution heat-treated with annealing done at 2150 °F to 2250 °F (1176 °C to 1232 °C), followed by rapid air cooling or water quenching.

Applications

Aerospace: Gas turbine components, exhaust systems, and structural parts requiring heat resistance.

Industrial: High-temperature furnaces, chemical processing equipment.

Medical: Potential use in implants due to biocompatibility, though specific grades may apply.

Thanks to its many favorable properties, AMS 5537 can be used in the aerospace industry for manufacturing of gas turbine engine components which are often subjected to high heat, turbine rings and turbine blades, and other combustion chamber parts.

Processing and Fabrication

Formability: Sheets are cold-rolled or annealed, with standards specifying thickness tolerances and surface finish. Forming may require controlled processes due to work-hardening tendencies.

Welding and Machining: Challenging; requires specialized techniques (e.g., TIG welding) to avoid cracking. Machining needs sharp tools and adequate cooling.

Comparison with Other Alloys

Contrasts with nickel-based superalloys (e.g., Inconel) by offering better sulfidation resistance. Higher tungsten content than Haynes 188 enhances strength but may reduce formability.

Limitations

Cost: Higher material and fabrication costs compared to stainless steels or nickel alloys.

Availability: Cobalt sourcing can be geopolitically sensitive, affecting supply chains.

Standards and Heat Treatment

AMS 5537 may require solution annealing (2150°F/1177°C) to optimize properties. Mechanical properties vary with temper (e.g., annealed vs. cold-worked states).

Foils, plates, sheets and strips made of AMS 5537 are easily formable with forging and hot working at a temperature between 1900 °F, and 2300 °F (1038 °C to 1260 °C). Cold working is also possible, but keep in mind that AMS 5537 hardens rapidly during treatment.

AMS 5537 can be readily welded using all standard methods. For best results, we recommend the AMS 5796 welding wire, which is also a sub-type specification of Cobalt L605.
