Heat Treatment of AMS 5869 Inconel 625

To optimize the mechanical properties of Inconel 625, AMS 5869 specifies several heat treatment processes:

1. Solution Annealing

Temperature Range: 1900°F – 2100°F (1038°C – 1149°C)

Process: The material is heated to dissolve precipitates, then rapidly quenched (typically in water).

Result: Improves ductility, corrosion resistance, and homogenizes the microstructure.

2. Aging (Precipitation Hardening)

Temperature Range: 1200°F – 1400°F (649°C – 760°C)

Process: After solution annealing, aging promotes the formation of gamma prime (γ') and gamma double prime (γ'') phases, enhancing strength.

Result: Increases tensile strength and creep resistance while maintaining toughness.

3. Stress Relieving

Temperature Range: 1200°F – 1400°F (649°C – 760°C)

Process: Used after welding or cold working to reduce residual stresses.

Result: Prevents stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and improves dimensional stability.
