Stellite 6 Bushing

Stellite 6 Bushing

Stellite 6 bushings are manufactured from a wear-resistant cobalt-chromium-tungsten alloy. They can be supplied as blanks—allowing customers to finish-machine the inner and outer diameters themselves—or delivered as fully finished components in accordance with drawings.

Products Description

A bushing is a ring-shaped sliding bearing component fitted over a shaft or pin; it serves to support radial loads and reduce friction while allowing for easy replacement after wear, thereby protecting the more expensive shaft or machine housing.

The Stellite 6 bushing is the most widely used grade among cobalt-based alloy bushings and is regarded by the industry as the standard for general-purpose wear-resistant bushings. It is designed primarily to provide consistent wear and galling resistance under operating conditions involving high temperatures, corrosion, and a lack of-or failure of-lubrication.

Key performance parameters

Performance Indicators Typical Values
Hardness (HRC) 38 – 44 (as-cast)
Density 8.30 – 8.46 g/cm³
Maximum Service Temperature 750 – 800°C (oxidizing atmosphere)
Tensile Strength ~860 – 1150 MPa
Elongation As-cast <1%; Forged 6B can reach 5–15%

Key Advantages

Galling and Scuffing Resistance: Stellite 6 bushings feature a low coefficient of friction; they can operate against metal surfaces without galling or material transfer, even under unlubricated conditions or in the event of lubrication failure. These half-bushings and half-sleeves maintain efficient operation even when lubricants are diluted or decompose at high temperatures.

High-Temperature Dimensional Stability: At temperatures up to 650°C, the thermal expansion coefficient of Stellite 6 is comparable to that of austenitic stainless steel. However, it possesses exceptional resistance to softening, thereby avoiding the rapid failure issues common to standard bearing steels at temperatures above 300°C.

Superior Toughness within the Stellite Family: With a carbon content (0.9–1.4%) lower than that of Stellite 12 and Stellite 1, Stellite 6 features a more dispersed carbide distribution, resulting in impact and cavitation resistance that is significantly superior to higher-carbon grades.

Corrosion Resistance: It withstands media such as oxidizing acids, seawater, and molten zinc or aluminum, making it suitable for applications in food processing machinery and chemical processing equipment.

Selection Criteria

Choose Stellite 6 bushings when the operating conditions involve moderate impact, cyclic thermal stress, corrosive media, or temperatures in the 400–750°C range. It offers the best toughness and highest tolerance for operational variables within the Stellite family.

Do not choose Stellite 6 for applications involving pure abrasive wear without impact; instead, choose Stellite 12 or Stellite 1 (which have higher carbon content). For exposure to strongly reducing acids, choose Hastelloy. Stellite 6 is irreplaceable where high temperatures meet boundary lubrication or dry friction.

The function of the Stellite 6 bushing

In these machines, Stellite 6 bushings serve as sacrificial wear components; fitted over shafts or pins, they bear the brunt of friction and wear. When worn, only the bushing needs replacement, thereby protecting the more expensive shaft and machinery body.

Core Function: Protecting Critical Components
In equipment such as pumps, valves, and agitators, shafts or valve stems are the primary moving parts. Acting as the sliding contact surface, the Stellite 6 bushing absorbs all friction and abrasive wear, significantly extending the service life of the shaft.

Solving "Galling" and Lubrication Failure Issues
In operating environments like high-temperature valves and pump seals, lubricants can easily thin, decompose, or fail. Under these conditions, ordinary stainless steel is prone to adhesive wear (galling) against mating metal surfaces, leading to equipment seizure. Stellite 6 features a low coefficient of friction and anti-galling properties; it can operate against mating metal without cold welding or material transfer, even in the absence of lubrication or if lubrication fails.

Maintaining Dimensional and Performance Stability at High Temperatures
In high-temperature environments-such as furnace hearth rolls or hot-dip galvanizing lines-Stellite 6 bushings retain their hardness even at 500°C. While their thermal expansion coefficient is similar to that of austenitic stainless steel, they possess exceptional resistance to softening, ensuring that the fit clearance between the bushing and the shaft remains stable and controlled at high temperatures.
