Stellite 6b Alloy AMS 5894 Core Technical Requirements
1) Strictly comply with common business standards
Chemical composition
| Element | AMS 5894 Requirements (wt%) | Commercial Stellite 6B Typical Values |
| Co | Balance | Balance |
| Cr | 27.0 - 32.0 | 28.0 - 32.0 |
| W | 3.5 - 5.5 | 3.5 - 5.5 |
| C | 1.0 - 1.7 | 1.0 - 1.7 |
| B | 1.5 - 2.0 | 1.5 - 2.0 |
| Fe | ≤ 2.0 | ≤ 3.0 |
| Si | ≤ 1.0 | ≤ 2.0 |
| Ni | ≤ 2.0 | ≤ 3.0 |
| S, P | ≤ 0.015 (each element) | Not strictly limited |
Key difference: AMS 5894 has a lower tolerance for impurities (Fe, Si, Ni, S, P), ensuring material purity.
Stellite 6b Mechanical properties (forged state)
Hardness:
Forgings:
HRC 40-55 (need to meet the process heat treatment system)
High temperature performance:
815°C (1500°F) high temperature tensile:
Tensile strength ≥ 345 MPa (50 ksi)
Yield strength ≥ 275 MPa (40 ksi)
Impact toughness:
Charpy V-notch impact energy ≥ 15 J (room temperature, typical value)
AMS 5894 Stellite 6b Heat treatment system
Solution treatment:
Temperature: 1200-1230°C (2190-2250°F)
Cooling method: Rapid air cooling or water quenching (to inhibit carbide precipitation)
Aging treatment (optional):
Temperature: 760-790°C (1400-1450°F)
Time: 4-8 hours (to optimize the distribution of wear-resistant phases)
Performance Advantages
| Characteristic | Performance |
| Hardness | HRC 55-62 (welded state), much higher than ordinary steel (HRC 20-30) and tool steel (HRC 45-55) |
| Wear resistance | Under severe abrasive wear conditions, the service life can reach 2-5 times that of cemented carbide |
| High temperature performance | Maintains high hardness and wear resistance at 980°C (resists high temperature softening) |
| Corrosion resistance | Resistant to organic acids, alkaline media, seawater and high temperature oxidation (close to the level of stainless steel 316L) |
| Impact resistance | Moderate (lower than Stellite 6 due to increased brittleness caused by high boron) |
Stellite 6b Standard positioning
AMS 5894 is an aerospace material specification developed by SAE International (Society of Automotive Engineers), which specifically specifies the technical requirements for the forged cobalt-based high-temperature alloy Stellite 6B.
Applicable forms: hot or cold forged bars, forgings (non-cast/hardfacing).
Core goal: to ensure the high temperature strength, wear resistance and corrosion stability of the AMS 5894 Stellite 6b in extreme environments such as aircraft engines and gas turbines.
Stellite 6b Special process requirements
1) Manufacturing process control
| Part | AMS 5894 Special requirements |
| Melt | Must use vacuum induction melting (VIM) or vacuum arc remelting (VAR) |
| Forging | Final forging temperature ≥ 980°C (1800°F) to avoid low temperature cracking |
| Non-destructive testing | 100% ultrasonic flaw detection (in accordance with ASTM E588) |
2) Microstructur
Grain size:
ASTM grade 5 or finer (uniform equiaxed crystals)
Phase composition:
Matrix: Cobalt-rich solid solution
Strengthening phase: CrB₂ boride + M₇C₃/M₂₃C₆ carbide (size ≤ 10μm)
Defect control:
No pores, no inclusions (in accordance with ASTM E1245)
