PH13-8mo Stainless Steel Pipe (ASTM A705,UNS S13800)

PH13-8mo Stainless Steel Pipe (ASTM A705,UNS S13800)

PH13-8Mo is a "special operations material" specifically designed for extreme applications requiring high strength, corrosion resistance, and absolute rust prevention. It addresses the high-end challenges of aerospace, deep-sea, and high-stress corrosion environments.

PH13-8Mo is a precipitation hardening stainless steel with excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking (suitable for key components of offshore platforms, aircraft landing gear, and submarine equipment), a combination of ultra-high strength and good toughness (making parts that are hard and not prone to sudden brittle fracture), and excellent transverse properties.

Regarding our customers' concerns about price and delivery time, based on our past purchasing experience, we've concluded that steel pipes are significantly more expensive than ordinary stainless steel, and even more expensive than many duplex steels. Delivery times are longer due to the complex production process and stringent testing of steel pipes. If a quote is significantly lower than the market price or promises an extremely short delivery time, you should be highly cautious.

Regarding technical communication, we encourage you to discuss in detail the end applications, processing plans, and heat treatment arrangements for your stainless steel pipes with our technical support team. We can help you anticipate risks in advance, such as whether a given wall thickness is suitable for your cold-bending process, or recommend a more appropriate aging schedule.

Key details of the procurement contract

1. Confirm Grade and Standard:

General Grades: PH13-8Mo, X2CrNiMoAl13-8-2 (European Standard), S13800 (UNS No.)

Core Standard: Must be ASTM A705. This is a common specification for high-end industries, with stringent requirements for composition, purity, and performance. Ordinary national standards (GB) cannot fully cover all their high-end characteristics.

2. Condition and Specification:

Delivery condition must be Condition A (solution annealed).

Clearly specify whether it is a seamless or welded pipe. Seamless pipe is preferred for pressure-bearing or high-fatigue applications. Welded pipe must provide a full weld non-destructive testing report.

Precise dimensional tolerances: outer diameter, wall thickness, length, ovality, straightness. This directly affects subsequent assembly accuracy.

3. The Certificate of Quality (MTC) is crucial:

It must be provided with the goods and verified to include: melting method (vacuum induction melting is a high-end standard), furnace number, measured chemical composition (especially extremely low levels of impurity elements such as S and P), and mechanical properties under Condition A.

When requesting a quote, be direct and specify your requirements, for example, provide "PH13-8Mo, solution-treated (Condition A), seamless pipe, conforming to ASTM A705, specifications ØX×t, requiring a complete set of MTC and UT reports." This lets suppliers know you are knowledgeable, and their quoted prices and solutions will be more realistic.

Key points of processing and subsequent treatment

  • Machining of PH13-8mo tubes: under Condition A conditions, offers good machinability, similar to austenitic stainless steel. However, sharp cutting edges and sufficient cooling are crucial to prevent surface damage due to material sticking.

  • For welding: This must be performed before the final aging treatment. Use welding consumables matching its composition (such as welding wire specified in ASTM A705) and strictly control heat input. A complete solution treatment and aging process is required after welding to restore the properties of the heat-affected zone. This is a highly technical task.

  • Final heat treatment (aging): This is the most critical step. Aging temperature and time must be precisely controlled (approximately 482°C/4 hours for H900). The heating rate and furnace temperature uniformity will affect the uniformity of the final properties. It is strongly recommended to entrust this to a manufacturer with aerospace heat treatment qualifications (such as Nadcap certification).
