Procurement Instructions

As a purchasing professional, the choice between Haynes 230 and Haynes 233 depends on the type of high-temperature "battlefield" you are facing. Simply put, Haynes 233 is an "upgraded" or "specialized" version of Haynes 230, designed to simultaneously solve the two major challenges of "oxidation resistance" and "creep resistance" under extremely high temperatures, while Haynes 230 is already a proven benchmark in terms of high-temperature strength.

Material Comparison List

Feature Dimension Haynes 230 (UNS N06230) Haynes 233
Core positioning Solid solution strengthened nickel-chromium-tungsten-molybdenum alloy. A widely accepted benchmark for high-temperature alloys in the gas turbine industry. A newly developed nickel-cobalt-chromium-molybdenum-aluminum alloy is designed to combine a creep strength of 230 and an oxidation resistance of 214.
Design Goals It achieves an excellent balance between high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance, thermal stability, and processability. Bridging performance, which means having excellent oxidation resistance and creep rupture strength at extremely high temperatures (such as above 980°C).
High-temperature resistant core High chromium (~22%) forms a chromium oxide protective film, providing oxidation resistance. High tungsten (~14%) + molybdenum provides solid solution reinforcement, resisting creep. Based on a similar composition of chromium, tungsten, and molybdenum (e.g., 230), significant amounts of cobalt and aluminum were added. Aluminum helps to form a more stable alumina film.
Key performance It exhibits excellent oxidation resistance at temperatures up to 1175°C, maintains high strength at 980°C, and demonstrates good long-term thermal stability. Preliminary tests show that at temperatures above approximately 982°C (1800°F), its oxidation resistance is close to that of top-tier aluminum alloys, while its creep strength is far superior.
Process and Welding Known for its good formability and weldability, it can be welded using conventional fusion welding. Preliminary reports indicate that it is easy to manufacture. As a relatively new alloy, specific process parameters are likely still being developed.
Typical applications Combustion chambers and transition sections of gas turbines; industrial furnace rollers and high-temperature heat exchangers; solar thermal power generation heat absorption tubes. For high-temperature components, such as the next generation of more efficient gas turbines, which have more stringent requirements for material limits.
Market and Procurement It is a very mature technology with a complete set of standards, such as ASTM (e.g., B435, B572) and AMS (e.g., 5878), and a wide network of suppliers. It belongs to a relatively new high-end alloy. Market applications, standard coverage, and spot supply are likely far fewer than 230. Procurement channels include the Lork Group.

Comprehensive comparison

 Haynes 230: A Proven All-Round Performer

If you need an alloy with optimal overall performance below 1200°C (especially in the 800-1100°C range), the most stable supply chain, and the most mature processing technology, Haynes 230 is usually the first choice.

Balanced Performance: Its success lies in its well-rounded nature. Its high chromium content provides excellent resistance to oxidation and carburization, while its high tungsten and molybdenum content contributes excellent high-temperature strength and creep resistance. For example, in concentrated solar power (CSP) applications, it is often chosen as the absorber tubing, serving as an alternative to Inconel 625.

Process-Friendly: Compared to other high-performance nickel-based alloys, Haynes 230 offers better cold and hot working and welding properties, reducing the cost and difficulty of manufacturing complex components.

Easy to Source: You can easily find products that meet standards such as ASTM B572, ASTM B435, or aerospace-grade AMS 5878, and there are numerous suppliers in the market.

Haynes 233: A Rising Star for Extreme Operating Conditions

Haynes 233 should only be considered when your design must exceed the temperature barrier of 980°C (approximately 1800°F), and components are simultaneously subjected to high stress and exposed to a highly oxidizing environment.

Performance Breakthrough: Essentially, it addresses a paradox: alloys like Haynes 214, which rely on high aluminum to form an alumina film, exhibit excellent oxidation resistance but poor creep strength above approximately 982°C; while Haynes 230 has good creep strength but still has room for improvement in extreme oxidizing environments. Haynes 233 attempts to combine the advantages of both.

Application Prospects: Therefore, it is primarily geared towards next-generation ultra-efficient gas turbines, aero-engines, and other cutting-edge fields. These devices increase efficiency by raising operating temperatures, placing near-stringent demands on materials.

Procurement Considerations: Procuring such advanced materials may require direct contact with strong suppliers who have aerospace customer cases with similar alloys. Focus should be placed on preliminary test data rather than historical performance, and technical specifications and acceptance criteria should be clearly defined in the contract.

Procurement and Selection Recommendations

  • Primary Decision-Making Basis – Temperature and Stress:

If the operating temperature is consistently below 980°C, or even slightly above it in the short term but requires comprehensive consideration of cost, process, and supply chain, then Haynes 230 should be firmly chosen.

Haynes 233 should only be evaluated when the operating conditions are clearly defined, consistently exceeding 980°C or higher, and oxidation and creep are the primary causes of failure.

  • Key Points for Supplier Communication:

When inquiring about Haynes 230, explicitly request a Material Certificate (MTC) conforming to ASTM B572 or AMS 5878 standards, and inquire about its inventory status and processing services.

When inquiring about Haynes 233, prepare specific operating parameters (temperature, atmosphere, stress), and directly request the latest Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and preliminary application examples from the original manufacturer or authorized distributor.

  • Cost and Risk Awareness:

As a new alloy, Haynes 233 will be significantly more expensive than the established Haynes 230, with potentially longer lead times and higher minimum order quantity (MOQ) requirements.

Choosing Haynes 233 may mean facing some "first-time application" process challenges with the supplier, which needs to be considered in the cost and risk budget.
