UNS S21800, commercially known as Nitronic® 60, is a high-performance austenitic stainless steel engineered to deliver exceptional mechanical strength, wear resistance, and corrosion protection-far surpassing conventional grades like Type 304 and 316. Originally developed for high-temperature applications, Nitronic 60 excels in extreme wear, galling, and oxidation resistance, making it a preferred choice for demanding industrial, aerospace, and energy applications.

Fabrication & Processing

 

Cold Working

Cold rolling or drawing can further increase strength, but does not improve anti-galling properties.

Heavy cold working may induce slight magnetism.

 

Machining & Welding

Machining: More challenging than standard austenitic grades; requires rigid setups and carbide tooling.

Welding: Compatible with TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW), and SMAW methods. Post-weld heat treatment is typically unnecessary.

 

Heat Treatment

 

Annealing: Performed at 1900–2050°F (1038–1121°C) followed by rapid cooling to optimize corrosion resistance and ductility.
