Product Introduction

Monel R405 is a free-machining nickel-copper solid-solution alloy. It is an improved version of Monel 400, and its most significant characteristic is its excellent resistance to seawater and chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking, while also offering excellent machinability.

Monel R405 nickel alloy sheet is typically available in thicknesses of 0.5-80 mm and widths up to 3 meters. Roco Group offers simple processing services such as slitting and cutting. Lead time for standard in-stock items is generally 3-5 business days, while lead time for custom products is 15-35 business days. Please get in touch with us for a technical specification sheet or a quote.

Procurement Specifications, Standards, and Delivery

  • Common Specifications: A wide range of plate thicknesses is available, from thin to thick (e.g., 0.5mm to 80mm). Specific supply specifications need to be confirmed with us.

  • Core Standards:

International/USA: ASTM B164 is the most commonly used standard. For the aerospace field, AMS 4674 can be referenced.

Domestic: General specifications can refer to the latest GB/T 2054-2023 "Nickel and Nickel Alloy Plates".

UNS Number: N04405, an internationally recognized designation.

  • Delivery Condition: Must be specified. Common conditions include "cold-rolled" (bright surface, high strength) or "annealed" (good plasticity, easy for further processing). Different conditions result in significant differences in performance and subsequent processing difficulty.

  • Cost and Delivery Time:  Prices are highly influenced by nickel price fluctuations. R405, due to its sulfur content, is generally slightly more expensive than Monel 400, but its excellent machinability can significantly reduce processing costs; a comprehensive evaluation is necessary. Standard sizes are in stock; custom sizes require ordering and have longer lead times.

Manufacturing Process and Challenges

Monel R405 nickel alloy plate has excellent machinability, but hot working is strictly prohibited. It has good weldability, but attention should be paid to its tendency to hot cracking. Whether purchasing raw materials, machining simple parts, or precision-machined parts, the following points should be noted by skilled machining personnel regarding secondary processing:

Machining:

This is its greatest advantage. It is recommended to use carbide tools and a strategy of lower speeds and moderate feed rates. Adequate coolant will extend tool life.

Cold Working:

It can be formed by cold rolling, bending, etc., but work hardening occurs, and intermediate annealing may be required.

Welding:

Conventional welding can be used, but sulfur may increase the tendency for hot cracking. Low heat input processes should be used, and welding materials compatible with the base material (such as Monel 60 or ERNiCu-7 welding wire) should be used. Consult an expert before welding critical structures.

Key Points of Quality Inspection Process

To ensure the material quality of Monel R405 nickel alloy plates, a complete third-party testing report should be requested from the supplier during procurement. Lork Inspection Laboratory's comprehensive testing program lists the following four key testing items:

1. Document Review: First, verify the Material Certificate (MTC) to confirm the furnace number, standard, composition, and performance data.

2. Composition Verification: Partial Motion Spectroscopy (PMI) analysis is recommended, with a focus on verifying that the nickel, copper, and sulfur contents are within the agreed range.

3. Performance Testing: Perform room temperature tensile and hardness tests on batch samples to verify compliance with the contractually specified condition (annealed or cold-rolled).

4. Non-Destructive Testing: For high-requirement plates, ultrasonic testing can be performed to check for internal defects such as delamination and inclusions.

5. Corrosion Resistance Testing: Depending on application requirements, salt spray testing or corrosion testing in specific media can be requested.
